Tax Collector Steele Announces Key West Office Consolidation Nearing Completion
Searstown office to remain open through August 7, with consolidated Key West services expected to begin August 13, increasing service capacity and reducing annual operating costs.
Key West, Fla., July 30, 2026 – Constitutional Tax Collector Sam Steele announced today that the renovation and reconfiguration of the Key West Main Office is nearing completion as part of the Tax Collector’s Office’s plan to consolidate Key West services into one central location.
The Key West Driver License Office at Searstown will remain open through Friday, August 7, 2026. To allow the State to install new driver license equipment and complete the transition, the Key West Main Office will be closed beginning Monday, August 10, 2026, and is expected to reopen for consolidated operations on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.
The consolidation will bring Key West services together at the Main Office, located at 1200 Truman Avenue in the Harvey Government Center. The project is expected to provide greater service capacity, more efficient staffing and a more predictable customer experience while eliminating the ongoing expense of operating a separate leased location.
“This project is about better service and responsible use of public resources,” Steele said. “By consolidating our Key West operations into one location, we can make services more convenient for the public, improve efficiency, reduce wait times and eliminate approximately $136,000 in annual recurring costs. We appreciate the public’s patience during construction and look forward to welcoming customers to the renovated Main Office.”
More Capacity at One Central Location
The Key West Main Office will feature an expanded lobby counter with additional customer service and supervisor workstations, increasing the office’s ability to serve the public. The same driver license services currently provided at Searstown will be available at the Main Office, along with the other services offered by the Monroe County Tax Collector’s Office.
The State has approved a new driving test route designed to minimize impacts on nearby residential streets while still meeting state driver testing requirements.
More Efficient Staffing and Reduced Wait Times
Consolidating the two Key West locations will allow employees to be positioned based on customer demand rather than dividing limited personnel between separate offices.
The Tax Collector’s review found that customers at the Searstown location generally experienced longer waits than those at the Main Office. While wait times varied depending on customer volume and staffing, peak waits at Searstown sometimes reached as high as two hours, which Steele said was not an acceptable level of service for Monroe County residents.
Tax Collector employees are being cross trained on all services, allowing supervisors to shift staff in real time to the transactions and service areas experiencing the greatest demand. This flexibility is expected to improve efficiency and help reduce customer wait times.
Reduced Annual Operating Costs
Closing the leased Searstown office will eliminate approximately $136,000 per year in expenses associated with rent, maintaining a separate facility, utilities, communications and duplicating operations at two locations.
The consolidation will reduce the cost of maintaining an additional rented facility while allowing the office to operate more efficiently from one central Key West location.
A Streamlined Customer Experience
Operating one central Key West office will make it easier for customers to know where to go for service. In the past, residents who visited the wrong location could be required to travel to the other office and begin the waiting process again.
The consolidation will provide one clearly identified location where customers can access a broader range of services, creating a more convenient and predictable experience.
